Fabric Block Printing and Dyeing Workshop


Are you interested in learning about block printing and natural dyeing? Then these workshops are for you. 

Your Instructor

Julia Raath is a textile print designer with extensive teaching experience in both the Higher Education and Vocational Education sectors in Australia and India. She has a particular interest in design, sustainable practice and experimental textiles with a focus on print and surface design.  Her passion for textiles has taken her all over the world and she now teaches workshops in Victoria and NSW along with working with artisans in India to create products for her online store.

Printed pattern repeats using block print techniques

When:  Saturday August 12, 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Includes: Blocks, cotton fabrics samples, printing inks.
What to bring: Gloves, clothes to work in, note book.

In this 4 hour workshop you will be introduced to the wonderful world of pattern repeats through the use of block printing techniques using water based fabric printing inks. Simple blocks will be made out of readily available resources and you will print onto fabric panels that may be used to make cushions or totes. You will leave the workshop with your own blocks and printed fabrics to take home.

All levels of experience welcome and you are encouraged to ask lots of questions.

Print and Stitch

When: Saturday September 9, 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Includes: Blocks, cotton fabric, printing inks, embroidery threads, needles.
What to bring: Gloves, clothes to work in, note book.

In this 4 hour workshop you will be introduced to some basic embroidery stitches which you can use to embellish your block printed fabric. There will be blocks available for participants to print onto a piece of fabric suitable for a cushion or a tote. You will learn about mixing print and stitch techniques, different embroidery threads, colour and texture. All levels of experience welcome and you are encouraged to ask lots of questions.

Natural Dyeing Workshop

When: Saturday 21st October, 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Includes: Fabrics, plant materials, dye accessories and pots, notes
What to bring: Gloves, clothes to work in, note book.

In this introductory workshop you will learn to extract colour from plants and create a coloured imprint from plant material.  This simple process is commonly known as eco printing and an exciting colour range can appear from a wide range of plant material. You will learn about which fabrics get the best results and we will experiment with various plant materials.

Cost: $100 per workshop, or $270 if you book for all three workshops.

An optional extra sewing workshop can also be provided to sew up the fabric you have printed. Details will be provided at the first workshop.
